Before Starring in ‘Ahsoka,’ Rosario Dawson First Found Fame in 2001’s ‘Josie and the Pussycats’

Before starring as Ahsoka Tano in the new Disney+ series, Rosario Dawson played Valerie Brown in 2001’s Josie and the Pussycats. The musical comedy film was based on the Archie Comics and 1970s cartoon about an all-girl rock band. Dawson’s role as the Pussycats’ bassist was an early highlight in her career, which has since spanned acclaimed indie films, Marvel shows, and now the Star Wars universe. Josie also marked an early big role for Tara Reid as drummer Melody Valentine. While not a box office smash, the film and its soundtrack have become cult classics. Dawson’s turn as Ahsoka shows her talent for bringing animated characters to life started over 20 years ago.

For the role of bassist Valerie, the filmmakers considered major music stars like Aaliyah, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and a young Beyonce Knowles. However, 19-year-old Rosario Dawson won the part with her strong comedic skills. Despite praise for satirizing pop culture, Josie and the Pussycats was a box office flop in 2001. But it has since become a cult favourite, especially among millennials. Dawson’s performance stood out, even early in her career. One of the writers, Harry Elfont, recalls thinking “she’s a movie star” at their first meeting. Now with acclaim in indie films and Marvel, plus her starring role in Ahsoka, Dawson has proven she was a talent to watch all the way back to her Josie days.
