Fantastic Fest 2023 will open with the world premiere of Legendary Pictures’ reboot of the 1984 cult classic The Toxic Avenger, starring Peter Dinklage.
Director Macon Blair’s reimagining centers on mild-mannered Melvin, who becomes disfigured after falling into toxic waste and adopts the superhero persona Toxie to fight evil. The film also stars Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon.
Fantastic Fest also announced the world premiere of the thriller Your Lucky Day, featuring one of Angus Cloud’s final performances in director Dan Brown’s debut. The festival team was deeply saddened by Cloud’s passing and wanted to honor his talent and life.
Your Lucky Day stars Sterling Beaumon, Jessica Garza, and Jason O’Mara in an ensemble cast. Set on Christmas Eve, it centers on a hostage situation in a small store over a $156 million winning lottery ticket, with events spiraling out of control.
Closing the festival is the world premiere of Nahnatchka Khan’s slasher-comedy Totally Killer for Prime Video and Blumhouse. Kiernan Shipka stars as a time-traveling teen trying to stop the Sweet Sixteen Killer.
Other programmed titles include Neon’s noir Eileen starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway; 20th Century’s sci-fi epic The Creator from Gareth Edwards; Paramount+’s Pet Sematary prequel Bloodlines; and Bleecker Street’s Stone Age thriller The Origin.
Additional world premieres are Strange Darling with Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner, the action film Jackdaw, HBO Europe’s 30 Coins from Alex de la Iglesia, and The All Golden about a courier uncovering her boyfriend’s dark secret.
