Imprisoned Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak About the 1MDB Scandal and the Whereabouts of Jho Low

It has been seven years since the U.S. Justice Department filed its largest-ever forfeiture complaint, alleging that billions of dollars were stolen from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund 1MDB and spent extravagantly around the world on luxury real estate, private jets, yachts, lavish parties, gambling trips, art, and even financing for the film The Wolf of Wall Street.
While authorities have seized many of the assets believed to be acquired with the stolen funds, and there have been major anti-corruption trials in Malaysia related to 1MDB, the man accused of masterminding the 1MDB scandal – the flamboyant Malaysian businessman Jho Low – remains a fugitive. Low is considered the most wanted white-collar criminal in the world, and many believe he is currently under house arrest in Shanghai, China after fleeing Malaysia. The whereabouts of Low and the full recovery of funds stolen from 1MDB continue to be a major ongoing saga seven years after the scandal first came to light.
The new documentary Man on the Run unpacks the massive 1MDB scandal and how a corrupt group carried out one of history’s biggest frauds. Directed by Cassius Michael Kim (The Wonder List with Bill Weir), the film features exclusive interviews with FBI agents Charles W. O’Neal and David Smith, who built the case against 1MDB. It also includes the last filmed interview with former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak before he was imprisoned for his role in the scandal, as well as an interview with current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The official trailer, premiered exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, details Jho Low’s celebrity obsession and how he allegedly used stolen money to get close to stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton and Jamie Foxx. One interviewee claims Low “had a bit of a crush on Britney Spears” and paid her $1 million to pop out of a birthday cake.
Razak, currently serving a 12-year prison sentence, is pointedly asked about the whereabouts of his former friend and advisor: “Where do think Jho Low is?”
The documentary Man on the Run is a production from The Smoking Section in collaboration with Evergreen Media. It will premiere in theatres in New York City on September 22 and in Los Angeles on September 29.
