‘Barbie’ Hits $900M Worldwide, ‘Ninja Turtles’ Reboot and ‘Meg 2’ Open

The holdover film Oppenheimer continues to be a major box office force as it approaches $400 million globally.
New releases Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Meg 2 opened in theaters this weekend, but faced stiff competition from box office juggernaut Barbie and holdover hit Oppenheimer.
The Barbie film surpassed $400 million domestically on its 14th day of release, the fastest ever for a Warner Bros. movie. It has now earned over $900 million globally and will likely join the billion dollar club soon. Oppenheimer continues its strong run, nearing $500 million globally and crossing $200 million in North America. While the new Turtle and Meg sequels tried to make a splash, Barbie and Oppenheimer maintained their box office domination.
The box office saw two major new releases this weekend – Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem reboot, which opened Wednesday, and New Line/Warner Bros’ shark sequel Meg 2: The Trench, opening nationwide on Friday.
The TMNT reboot earned $4.9 million on Wednesday for a two-day total of $15.1 million, including $3.9 million from Tuesday previews. The PG family film is projected to make around $35 million over its first five days, but estimates could change as the weekend continues.
Meg 2 took in $4 million from Thursday previews ahead of its Friday debut. Initial tracking forecasts the shark pic will open to $25-30 million.
More box office updates to come.
