Munich – Plot and Synopsis
Munich is a 2005 historical thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Tony Kushner and Eric Roth.
It is based on the book of the same name by Canadian journalist George Jonas. The film stars Eric Bana as Avner, an Israeli Black Ops team member assigned to assassinate 11 Palestinians suspected of terrorism.
Avner, who speaks fluent German, bases his team in an apartment in a crowded Arab neighbourhood in West Beirut under cover of a furniture store with his Lebanese-born partner, played by Daniel Day-Lewis.
As a result of posing as athletes at the Summer Olympic Games in Munich, Palestinian terrorists infiltrated the comparatively insecure athlete’s village in September 1972 and took hostages among Israeli athletes and coaches to release Arab prisoners in Israel they believe are illegally held.
In the end, eleven of those hostages are killed by the terrorist group Black September when the Israeli government refused to negotiate. After the massacre, a covert Israeli team is formed to assassinate the eleven westerners they consider responsible.
No official links, including to their unofficial handler, Ephraim, will exist between this team and the government or Mossad.
