The Prestige began in 1904 when the rivalry between Borden and Tesla had been ongoing for years. Borden accuses Tesla of using dangerous tricks, but Tesla claims that he has never harmed anyone in his life.
He then goes on to say that if anything were to happen to him, it would be destiny, not necessarily something that he can control or prevent.
Two months later, Tesla agreed to come out of retirement so long as he can use one of his most dangerous tricks in public. The trick is supposed to make the audience burst into flames.
Tesla invites several scientists and the press to watch him perform it in public, but when he asks for Borden, he is told that Borden has been taken to the hospital for an unspecified illness.
