Spotlight – Plot and Synopsis

The film follows a group of Boston Globe journalists as they work to expose the child sexual abuse committed by Boston-area Catholic priests.

The Boston Globe’s editor Marty Baron tasked a team of reporters in 2001 to examine claims that unfrocked priest John Geoghan molested more than 80 youngsters.

Reporters Michael Rezendes, Matt Carroll, and Sacha Pfeiffer interview victims and attempt to decrypt crucial papers. The reporters aim to show that the Roman Catholic Church has been covering up sexual assault.

Sexual molestation

In the prologue of the spotlight, a devastated mother is persuaded out of filing sexual molestation accusations against Father John Geoghan, and police officers are ordered not to disclose the event.

Robinson is given the order by Baron to employ the Spotlight team.

In early 2001, Marty Baron became editor-in-chief of The Boston Globe. Robby Robinson and the newspaper’s Spotlight team chief meet with Baron.

Baron tells Robinson to have the Spotlight team investigate after reading an article in which a lawyer for Geoghan’s victims says the archbishop knew for years that Geoghan assaulted minors.

New assignment, SNAP agrees to connect with Priest victims

Rezendes meets 86-case victim’s lawyer Mitchell Garabedian. Phil Saviano agrees to link the reporters with the victims and advises they speak with Richard Sipe.

The latter worked at a pedophile priest rehabilitation centre. With Sipe’s aid, they identified 87 priests who likely assaulted children in Boston.

Evidence against Geoghan’s pedophilia

The team interviews victims, priests, attorneys, and judges and fights to unseal court papers.

Despite efforts by the archbishop to halt the inquiry and worries that the report may insult the newspaper’s predominantly Roman Catholic readers, the team presses on.

After the September 11 attacks, they find that Law covered up Geoghan’s pedophilia and returned to their original plot. The first research paper was published in 2002.

Instead of protesting, many phones in with information about pedophile priests.

The concluding credits suggest abuse occurred in hundreds of locations and dozens of nations, from Boston to the Vatican.
