Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – Plot and Synopsis
Joel and Clementine decide to wipe their memories of one another.
After a confrontation, Joel Barish learns that the company Lacuna has removed Clementine’s memories of him. He decides to get the same process. For Joel to wake up without knowledge of the procedure, Lacuna staff members operate on his brain while he sleeps in his residence.
Joel is motivated by his memories of Clementine.
Beginning with their most recent argument, Joel relives his memories of Clementine as they are wiped. As he relives more pleasant moments, he concludes that he does not want to forget her.
The process stops as a result, but Stan contacts his boss, Howard, who shows up there and resumes it. Joel reaches his final memory of Clementine, the day of their first meeting on a Montauk beach. Clementine instructs Joel to meet her in Montauk as their memory begins to fade.
After learning the truth, Mary steals the Lacuna records.
Mary confesses her love to Howard, and they kiss at Joel’s apartment while Stan is outside. Arriving at the scene, Howard’s wife can see them through the window from the street.
