Iranian Islamists attacked the U.S. embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979, in retaliation for President Jimmy Carter offering the Shah Cancer treatment in the U.S.
During the Iranian Revolution. Sixty-six embassy staffers are taken captive.
Working as Canadian Filmmakers
The U.S. State Department is exploring alternatives for exfiltrating the escapees from Iran.
Tony Mendez is a CIA exfiltration specialist. He is inspired by Battle of the Planet of the Apes to create a cover narrative for the escapees that they’re Canadian filmmakers investigating exotic places for a science-fiction film.
Making a Fake film business
Mendez contacts CIA-trained make-up artist John Chambers. Chambers introduces Mendez to Lester Siegel.
Together, they built up a fake film business, advertised their ideas, and pretended to make a scientific movie in Star Wars style to provide authenticity to the cover narrative.

Mendez enters Iran as producer Kevin Harkins and meets the six escapees. He gives them false Canadian passports. They’re frightened to trust Mendez’s plan, knowing he’s risking his own life.
A scouting excursion to the bazaar to preserve their cover narrative turns poorly when a hostile shopkeeper attacks them, but their Iranian contact rescues them.

The escapees’ new ticket bookings are confirmed at the last minute, and the chief guard’s call to the bogus Hollywood production business is answered at the last second.
